Handbook on Biochar is a comprehensive and insightful guide that explores the science, production, and practical applications of biochar in sustainable agriculture and environmental management. Designed to benefit students of Soil Science, Environmental Science, and Agronomy, as well as researchers, policymakers, and practitioners, this book offers a thorough understanding of biochar-from its origin and methods of production to its physicochemical characteristics and multifaceted benefits. It highlights biochar's critical role in improving soil nutrient dynamics, enhancing microbial activity, increasing water retention, and boosting crop yields, thereby reinforcing its value as a tool for soil restoration and sustainable farming.
In recent years, biochar has gained global attention for its potential to tackle pressing challenges such as soil degradation, declining agricultural productivity, and climate change. Produced through the thermal decomposition of organic materials in low-oxygen environments, biochar uniquely integrates waste management, soil enhancement, and carbon sequestration, making it a key component in the pursuit of sustainable development and circular economy practices.
This handbook reflects the author's extensive experience and dedication to advancing biochar research and practice. It combines cutting-edge scientific knowledge with insights drawn from field experiments, laboratory analyses, and collaborations with farmers and experts across diverse agro-climatic regions. As such, Handbook on Biochar serves not only as a scientific reference but also as a practical manual for implementing biochar-based strategies to improve soil health, mitigate environmental impacts, and promote agro-ecological sustainability. It is an indispensable resource for anyone seeking to understand and harness the transformative potential of biochar in modern agriculture and environmental stewardship.
