Perspective & Challenges of Early Childhood Education: NEP 2020 The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in India prioritizes the fundamental aspects of literacy and numeracy, recognizing their pivotal role in education. Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) are emphasized as the cornerstone of learning, shaping students' abilities for effective communication and problem-solving. Within the NEP 2020 framework, continuous formative assessment emerges as a crucial mechanism to monitor and enhance FLN skills among students. This article explores the multifaceted aspects of FLN assessment, including various assessment modes, domains, school-based practices, and the implementation of Holistic Progress Cards (HPC). It delves into the objectives, methodology, and significance of continuous formative assessment, highlighting its role in shaping educational outcomes. Through a qualitative approach, drawing on primary data from the NEP 2020 and secondary sources, the study elucidates how continuous formative assessment aligns with FLN objectives, providing timely feedback, enabling targeted interventions, and informing instructional planning. The article examines diverse assessment modes such as observational, diagnostic, performance tasks, portfolio.
